EV Charger Permit Guide for Los Angeles Homes and Businesses

EV charger installation in Los Angeles garage

EV Charger Permits in LA

Electric vehicle charger installations are surging across Los Angeles. With California mandating EV readiness in new construction and millions of EVs on LA roads, permits for Level 2 home chargers and commercial charging stations are among the most common electrical permit requests LADBS processes.

Do You Need a Permit?

Yes any permanent EV charger installation (Level 2 or DCFC) requires an electrical permit in Los Angeles. The only exception is a standard 120V plug-in (Level 1) that uses an existing outlet, which doesn't require a permit. For dedicated 240V Level 2 chargers, you'll need a permit.

Express Permit Eligibility

Most residential EV charger installations qualify for express permit processing because they involve:

  • Single-family or multi-family residential installation
  • Standard 240V, 50A or 60A circuit
  • No service panel upgrade required (existing panel has capacity)
  • Single charger unit installation

Commercial EV charger installations and those requiring panel upgrades may still qualify for express, depending on scope. Our electrical permit team can assess your project quickly.

Residential vs Commercial

Residential EV charger permits are typically the simplest:

  • Submit electrical single-line diagram
  • Show circuit breaker size and wire gauge
  • Confirm panel has available capacity
  • Provide charger manufacturer specifications

Commercial installations involve additional considerations: load calculations, accessibility requirements (ADA compliance for public stations), and potentially utility coordination.

Panel Upgrade Considerations

If your electrical panel is already at capacity, a panel upgrade may be needed before adding an EV charger circuit. Panel upgrades can be done concurrently with EV charger permits in many cases. However, if you're upgrading amperage (e.g., 100A to 200A), this requires a separate regular permit for the panel work. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
